Wrapping up my career as a student, I am reflecting on the many experiences that have shaped me as a teacher. After learning about many theories and aspects of teaching, it was time to put my knowledge to the test. Spending time in the classroom, working with students, I have grown in many aspects of my personality as well as my capabilities as a teacher. Something that has always come easy to me is building relationships. Not only in the classroom and in the school walls are relationships important. The relationships built with students, staff and parents will reach far beyond the classroom. With students, it is important to begin the year by creating relationships with students that are open and welcoming, but also respectful. I will bring aspects of Responsive Classroom into the room to create an inviting space that is conducive to learning. I will build relationships with students so they feel comfortable discussing issues they may be having or share successes they have. I also feel it is a high priority to build relationships with the students’ parents. Content is taught within the classroom but grows immensely when implemented at home. Having communication with parents to keep parents connected to what is happening in the classroom will benefit the students. It is key to build positive relationships with parents from the beginning of the year. Keeping a positive relationship with the parents will make possible struggles easier. Struggles will always come, especially as a new teacher. Leaning to team teachers and other staff members will aid in the struggles that will come. Having strong relationships will also provide a better work environment. Creating relationships with students, parents, and staff will aid in a better school climate. I want to be part of a school that is welcoming to all students, parents, and staff. The building should show pride of all cultures represented in the school. I want to work in an environment where staff can interact seamlessly and students feel comfortable to express themselves. Most of all, the school should base all concerns on best interest of the students. Within the classroom, I want to incorporate Responsive Classroom techniques to ensure each student is represented and feels an equal part to the classroom. I plan to teach students not only the required curriculum but also life skills. I will incorporate real life experiences with the curriculum. Ideally, the required curriculum will build on student’s prior knowledge. Unfortunately, this will not always be possible, particularly in primary grades. Having some sort of knowledge to tie into new material. I also plan to make the classroom a very positive environment. I want to focus on positive behavior and reward students for positive behavior. As for negative behavior, I hope to mute that as much as possible with rewarding positive behavior. When that does not work, I plan to have the type of relationship with my students that I can have a conversation with them discussing the behavior and get to the root of the problem. To me, it is important that the students understand the impact of their actions and know that it was their choice and it is their responsibility to change it. All together, the relationships, the classroom management, and the theories that drive teaching styles, all revolve around the students and their best interests. I am a part of this profession and I love this profession because of the difference I can make for my students. Each year, the appearance of the classroom will be molded by the individual students that make up the class. I will continue to grow as a teacher and add new techniques to my teaching style as well as my classroom management.
