Standard 8: Assessment
A teacher must understand and be able to use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the student.
Artifact Descriptions
To represent Standard 8, I have chosen a running record. This running record is taken from a first grade classroom, at fourth quarter. This running record shows three scores beneath the reading including the words correct per minute, number of mistakes, and accuracy percentage. The student is given one minute to read as far as they could.
Analysis
I chose this artifact because this assessment can be done to show progress of a student's reading skills. I took this from my student teaching placement where running records are taken weekly. This particular student had just been part of a reading intervention and has shown great improvement.
Synthesis
Running records can be difficult to make time for on a weekly basis but I hope to incorporate these in my room. Many teachers do running records but at a lower capacity. The weekly running records will give me immediate results of the skills that the students have mastered and what they are struggling with. The results of the running records will allow me to revisit skills if necessary.
